Which Digital X-Ray Sensor Gives You The Best Value?

If you’re running a busy dental practice, your sensor matters more than you think. I’ve gone through a lot of tech over the years—sometimes switching brands out of frustration, sometimes out of curiosity. But after using all five of these sensors across two offices, I’ve developed a clear picture of what works, what’s overhyped, and what’s worth every penny.
For those who want a high-level overview, here is the chart that summarizes everything:

For those who enjoy reading, here is a more-detailed review.:
I didn’t base this list on specs alone. I based it on real-world use: daily wear-and-tear, patient comfort, staff training time, image quality, support interactions, and cost over time.
Here’s how everything stacked up for me:
#5 – Carestream®
Carestream gets a lot of things right—especially the image area (the largest of the bunch at 930 mm²). But what tripped me up was everything around it. There’s no accidental damage coverage, cable isn’t repairable, and support isn’t particularly responsive unless you’re on their paid plan. If you never drop sensors and don’t mind paying for replacements later on, it’s workable—but for me, it just didn’t hold up.

Price: $5,999

#4 – Schick®
This one came highly recommended by a few colleagues. The imaging was solid, and the sensor felt sturdy. That said, I had two sensors fail within 18 months, and the replacements were refurbished—which I didn’t expect for the price. Cable issues cost me another $800. Support was fine but nothing special. Not a bad sensor, just not worth the premium in my view.
Price: $7,995
#3 – Open Sensor
This is what I started using in my satellite office, and I was surprised. For $2,999, it’s a solid performer—lightweight, decent image area, and it comes with a 5-year accidental protection plan, which is rare at this price point. Support was responsive, and all replacements were brand new. It’s missing cable repair and lacks the polish of higher-end brands, but as a budget-friendly workhorse? It gets the job done.
Price: $2,999
#2 – Dexis™
I’ve used Dexis the longest—about five years across two locations. It’s familiar, integrates well with most software, and the images are crisp. But the sensor is thick (8.8 mm), and patients with small mouths noticed. What also bothered me was that replacement sensors sometimes came refurbished. Support is pricey after the first year, and DexCare adds even more to the cost. Still, it’s solid if you’re used to it—and the software side is strong.
Price: $10,999
#1 – DentiMax Dream Sensor
This is the first sensor that genuinely impressed me and my team. It’s slim, easy to position, and delivers crystal-clear images—on par with sensors twice the price. Patient comfort noticeably improved, and the learning curve for staff was practically zero.
What stood out most was reliability. After a year of use, we’ve had no major issues. When one sensor was accidentally dropped, the replacement was brand new—not refurbished. The sensor comes with built-in accidental coverage and even has a repairable cable, which I’ve only seen with this model.
Support has been responsive, and the optional plan is fairly priced. While not the cheapest, it’s been the most cost-effective over time—less downtime, fewer headaches, and no surprise bills. It’s now our primary sensor across both offices, and I don’t see that changing.
Price: $6,999

Updated May 2025: After rotating all of these through my practice, two sensors stand out:
If you’re cost-conscious, the Open Sensor is a no-brainer. At just 43% the cost of Dexis or Schick, it offers strong image quality, accidental coverage, and brand-new replacements – all for under $3K.
But if you’re after the best overall experience, the DentiMax Dream Sensor is in a league of its own. It’s dependable, comfortable, and built with long-term value in mind. It’s the only sensor I’ve stuck with for more than two years—and I don’t plan to switch anytime soon
